Embracing Industry Home Business Series: Direct Sales

Home-based business owner

Hello, it’s week two of Embracing Industry’s Home-based Business series.  This week, I am so happy to be interviewing one of my dearest friends for over 20+ years.

Throughout the years I have observed her business skills, and I am very impressed with how she serves her clients and team members.   In addition, I admire how she prioritizes her family by serving them first.

She loves what she does, believes in her product and represents her company well.  I believe these qualities have added to her success!

Let’s learn more about Tanesia.  I hope you are encouraged!

Tell us about yourself?

Hello, my name is Tanesia Belvin.  I am a loving wife to a very strong and handsome Marine for the past seventeen and a half years, the mother of two very bright children ages 12 and 9,  and an Independent Mary Kay Beauty Consultant since 2008.

 Embracing Industry Direct Sales

When and why did you start your business?

After having our second child, my husband and I decided that it would be best for me to stay home with the children until our son reached the age to where he was able to communicate effectively with us about his day.

Hearing about the Mary Kay opportunity, I was most impressed with the fact that Mary Kay founded the company based on the principle of God first, Family second, and career third.

Knowing that I could work a business at my own pace all while being encouraged to keep the things most valuable to me in their proper place, seemed like a no-brainer.  Plus, we were living in a new state and it seemed like a great way for me to meet other women and make new friends.

Although it took me about a year and a half to commit to giving the Mary Kay opportunity a try, I am so glad that I did!

What is your favorite part about your business?  What is your least favorite?

The thing I love most about my business is the flexibility to arrange my schedule in a way that does not take away from my family and the fact that we do not have territories in which we have to stick to while selling our products.

This means that I am able to maintain my customer base all across the United States, which allows me to maintain personal relationships with each of my clients.  They can count on me for consistency, and I can count on them for the financial support they provide for me and family.

My least favorite thing about my business is that I am responsible for every aspect of it.  I am the secretary, delivery girl, inventory lady, tester (because I need to be able to speak to my clients about the product from an honest perspective), money handler, gift wrapper, you name it!

Combine those things with all the other hats I wear, and things can be a bit overwhelming at times.  Nevertheless, by Gods grace, I am able to consistently get things done.

How do you manage home, family, and business?

God first, family second, career third, this is the phrase that I have to rehearse on a daily basis to keep myself straight.

Remembering that the reason why I started my business was so that I could help out my Honey by making some “fun money” while being able to support him on the home front by managing our home well.

I am grateful to always have an awesome support system that reminds me of my need and ability to plan every detail by using weekly plan sheets. Consistency is key.

What one golden nugget of wisdom, would you give to wives and moms interested in starting a business from home?

Plan, Plan, Plan!

Oh, and don’t forget to (try) stick to your plan!  Make sure to start each day by spending time with the Lord and asking Him to guide you in accomplishing your tasks for the day.

Communicate with your family so that everyone is on the same page, and no one feels left out.  Establish boundaries (working hours) so that you do not always feel the need to be on the job all day long.

What is your favorite scripture that helps you in your business?

 Philippians 4:13:

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

It is my strong belief that I am exactly where God would have me to be and that He alone places me in the path of those whom He has blessed me to love on.

Some days I am tired, and some days are not as easy as others; however, when I remember to draw upon His strength, he continues to remind me that I  am blessed by Him so that I can go and be a blessing to others.

Last but not least, I leave you with Colossians 3:17:

And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.

10 Simple Easter Activities For Young Homeschoolers

Easter is right around the corner.  I am sure you’ve noticed the bunnies, candy, and baskets that are vying for our attention during this time of the year.  These items are fun and yummy, but I have purposed to look beyond the bunny and teach my children the real reason for this season.

As a Christian and Mom, it’s my responsibility to teach my children about Jesus and the purpose of Easter.

And why not have fun doing it?

Homeschool is a great opportunity to incorporate lessons about Resurrection Sunday.

Here are 10 simple Easter activities for young homeschoolers:

  1. Coloring pages are a great art activity for young learners, these pages can provide a visual as they a learning about Jesus.
  2. The Jelly Bean Prayer is a yummy idea to help children learn a beautiful prayer that shares the story of Easter.
  3. The Stained Glass Easter Cross is an artful way to display the Cross in your window during Easter, or all year long.
  4. The Easter Story Wreath is a wonderful way to teach older children about the events that lead up to Resurrection Sunday.
  5. Resurrection Eggs takes the fun and tradition of an Easter egg hunt while adding a more meaningful approach to the activity.
  6. The Cross Fingerpaint Craft is a fun, colorful art project and Bible lesson for children young and old.
  7. The Easter Story Game is an innovative way to tell the story of Jesus.
  8. Story Books are a great way to teach the true meaning of Easter.
  9. Easter Bingo is a clever way to use a classic game to tell the story of Easter.  The website suggests using jelly beans as makers.
  10. Videos that are based on the story of Jesus are another way to illustrate and teach our children.

These ideas would also be great for your family or a Sunday school class activity.

Have a wonderful Easter!

Beautiful Surrender: A Lesson From Mary

As the children and I have been going through our Advent calendar, I have been thinking about the life of Mary.   There is one particular scripture that resonates with me, every time I read it.  The story begins with Mary being greeted by the angel Gabriel, she is introduced to us as “a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph” Luke 1:27.  Gabriel excitedly announces to Mary that she is the favored one, who will conceive a child that will be named Jesus, the Son of God! Luke 1:28-33.

I can imagine Mary being surprised, scared and a bit confused by the news.  She was to be married to her beloved Joseph and now she’s pregnant by God!  Who would believe her?  Will Joseph believe her?  What would others think of her?  I would even suspect, that she had been ridiculed by those who did not believe nor wanted to understand.

The most amazing part of this story, is her response in Luke 1:28:

And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

No matter how she felt, or the current circumstances; she decided to yield to the Lord.  She gave her life, her rights, in exchange for His will.

How can we learn from Mary today?

Are we willing to obey God, even if it’s uncomfortable, and we risk being mocked by others?

Are we willing to surrender:

The number of children we will have?

In our marriages as a godly wife?

How we raise our children?

Our health?

Our role at home?

Our thought life?

Our dreams and aspirations?

Our words?

Our relationships?

Our lives to God?

___________________ (You fill in the blank).

We know the rest of Mary’s story, ( you can read about it here, here  and here) her journey was no cakewalk, but she continued to trust in the Father.  Through all of her trials, she became the mother of the Savior of the world!

We can take note from Mary, although this life can be unpredictable, challenging and God may be calling us to do that unpopular thing…let us exercise our own sweet surrender, by repeating the words of Mary:

Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word… Luke 1:38 (ESV)

Sweet friend, let’s not miss the beauty in this verse!  When we give our lives to God, we are not missing out, we are actually gaining an abundant life in Him!

Jesus assures us of this in Matthew 10:39 (ESV):

Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

What will you surrender to God today?

7 Reasons Why Family Mealtime Is Still Important

The family table is more than just a spot to grab a quick meal, it’s an opportunity to come together to strengthen our family bond.

One of my fondest childhood memories is gathering together with my family during the holidays, or on Sundays, for a big dinner.

When my husband and I began our family, I requested that family dinner time at the table become a regular habit.   Now, that we are a family of six, our family table has grown bigger and more lively by the years!

Even more, I have learned why this  is a needed event in our home.

7 Reasons Why Family Mealtime Is Still Important

Connection

After a long day of school, work, running errands,  etc., it’s nice to sit down to enjoy good food and conversation in the comfort of your own home, with the people you love the most.  To create a more intimate experience, we have made the rule of no phones or tablets at the table.

Life Skills

Our children have the opportunity to learn new skills and develop a sense of responsibility. Dinner time is a team effort in our home, just about everyone pitches in.  Our older children, help with setting and clearing the table, sweeping and evening chores.

Social Skills

To improve their communication skills, we encourage our children to lead, participate and initiate table discussions. Its amazing (and sometimes amusing) watching them share their opinions, jokes, and handle disagreements. There are lots of questions being asked too!

Nutrition

I cook at home at least 6 days a week. This gives me the opportunity to feed my husband and children healthier options.

Also, this is a great time to introduce new foods.  Can you believe my 8 year old loves brussel sprouts?!

Spiritual Development

We have the chance to cultivate a regular prayer life.  At each meal, our family give thanks and appreciation for our food and time together.

Our children lead prayer during the day and Daddy leads prayer at dinner time. The children and I also have morning devotion during breakfast.

Training

Proper manners are developed at the meal table.  Particularly with little ones, this is something we have to reinforce frequently!  I am so grateful that we can see the fruits of our labor in the interactions of our children, especially, away from home.

Surprisingly, strangers have approached us in restaurants to compliment our children’s behavior, we are thankful for that and try not to take it for granted!

A Comfortable Place

Mealtime is a time for relaxation, a place we should be able to feel safe and secure with our loved ones.

It is essential that we work towards implementing good habits, traditions and memories in our families.

Why not start by gathering often at the family meal table?

How do you make mealtime an important part of  your family?
