As wives and moms, we have the responsibility and privilege to live out and inspire our families to pursue a healthy life.
When we take the time to implement a plan to better our family’s well-being, we are giving them a perpetual gift and blessing! The good thing is that you don’t have to accomplish this all at once, small steps will reap great benefits in the long run. 🙂
Here are 5 simple ways to get your family off to a good start.
Be the example
Do you remember that breakfast commercial where the kids are hiding out because mom is starting a new health kick again? Well, that used to be me!
I’ve come along way since those days, now I try to influence by example. And you know what it works! When my family sees me quietly making changes they are curious and want to try it.
I am happy to report that I’ve noticed my husband making his own changes and my kids excited about healthy food choices and exercising.
I also believe Moms have the greatest impact in the kitchen since we are often the ones preparing the food.
Cook from scratch
Introducing homemade meals doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Start with your favorite meals and finds ways to make them healthier. One way you could do this is by incorporating whole foods into your meals.
The great thing about homemade dishes is they have fewer ingredients, you know what you are eating and you made it! Another bonus is saving money by learning to make some of your family staples at home.
This is a less stressful way to begin transitioning to more nutritional items.
Cooking is at once child’s play and adult joy. And cooking done with care is an act of love.
Allowing our families to see fruit and veggies available for them encourages better food choices at home.
Try chopped or baby carrots, or a fruit bowl on the counter for a regular snack option.
Have fun, get them involved.
One way I involve my children is at the grocery store. They can touch, and explore the many colors and shapes in the produce section, and sometimes, they get to pick a few to take home.
Drink more water
Water is essential to our health. Teaching our children early creates a good habit of staying properly hydrated, as well as cutting back and being less hooked on sugar-laden drinks.
Water is also a necessary part of our body, we need it to function properly. Below I’ve listed several reasons our bodies need water:
- To help flush out toxins
- For proper food digestion
- To regulate our body temperature, which affects our blood circulation, cells, and organs
- A lubricant for our joints and tissues
Ultimately, I desire for my family and me to honor God with our bodies and to have a good quality of life. I hope these ideas will motive you in guiding your family in making better choices at home.
