I was so excited about starting my goals for the New Year. However, my plans were placed on hold. During the first two weeks of January, a sickness swept through our family in the form of cold, flu and stomach viruses. Finally, we are so thankful, to be back in good health!
Can I be honest with you? I didn’t handle that situation very well. After a couple of days of lying in bed, I began to have negative thoughts of defeat, and feelings of being overwhelmed and unaccomplished.
I wallowed in my own pity party.
I can be pessimistic sometimes, looking at the glass as half empty rather than half full. As I was speaking to a dear friend, she reminded me not to take my situation so seriously. Don’t you just love a good friend who can look into your situation, and speak truth about it before you go in too deep!
She reminded me that I could change my situation even when my circumstances were not ideal.
Change Your Thinking
I started by changing my negative thoughts. Instead, I focused on the many blessings in my life and the Word of God. While I was getting over my illness, I meditated on this scripture:
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.- 1 Peter 5:10 (ESV)
Staying focused on God’s promises, provided the hope I needed in my time of weakness. When life happens, we must keep our focus on God, not our problems.
but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. -Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)
When life happens, how can we continue to move forward? Do something that will help you stay the course. It could be as simple as taking a shower, getting dressed, eating well, going out for some fresh air, reading, talking to a friend, praying…whatever thing will refresh and encourage you to keep going.
It’s very easy to get stuck on the problems we are facing, but don’t give in!
There was one day the weather was really nice, we weren’t quite well yet, but we were getting better. I decided to get everyone dressed and head to the playground. The sun and fresh air gave us the energy and rejuvenation we needed after being in the house for so long.
Even if you don’t feel like it push past your feelings, trust in the Lord and just do it. You’ll be glad you did!
Jump Back In
Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.-Proverbs 4:25 (ESV)
Yep, just jump in and start. If you are anything like me, this is so simple but yet so difficult for the over-analytical mind! Especially, when I feel like I am so behind on accomplishing my goals. I have to override my default ways and simply start again.
Talking, thinking and strategizing have their place, but sometimes…well, most times, we just need to get up and make it happen!
Don’t focus on what you didn’t do in the past, focus on what you can do now.
We can’t control what will transpire in our lives, but we can decide how we will respond. When the unexpected happens, trust God and arm yourself with His truths.
How do you respond when life happens?
